This Lunch Talk will open with a brief introduction covering the definition and importance of security in biometrics, common security challenges in biometric systems and use cases. Mahesh will then move on to threats and risks in biometric hardware, including spoofing attacks, replay attacks, template inversion attacks, Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attacks and side-channel attacks. The talk will then hone in on cryptographic techniques in biometric Hardware (symmetric, asymmetric, custom cryptography, hashing, etc) and secure biometric authentication (secure communication between biometric sensors and Host and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) in biometric systems). Mahesh will conclude by discussing Trusted Platform Modules (TPM) and secure enclaves, the role of hardware security modules (HSM) in biometric encryption, protection against side-channel attacks (power analysis, timing attacks), and temper mechanism.
