NBLAW 2026 – Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory Annual Workshop 2026

Date: 2026-03-04 (09:00-12:45 CEST) Location: Online

Organizer: Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory (NBL) in cooperation with the European Association for Biometrics (EAB)

Attendance is free of charge but registration is required. All times in CET.

Program | Registration

Back in spring 2011 our Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory (NBL) was established and for the opening we organized a workshop. Since then, we have celebrated the NBL Annual Workshops (NBLAW). All the workshops are listed on the NBL homepage.

Building on the success of previous editions, the 2026 workshop will focus on the theme: Trustworthiness in Biometrics - Explainability, Fairness, and Regulations. We cordially invite you to participate in the 16th Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory Workshop 2026 which is an open and free-to-attend event.

With increasing deployment of biometric technologies in real-world applications, issues related to transparency, interpretability, bias, robustness, and regulatory compliance have become central to both research and practice. This year’s workshop aims to foster in-depth discussions on these aspects and to bridge perspectives across technical, ethical, and regulatory domains.

The workshop will be held online. Credentials will be shared prior to the event.

Program | Registration (ext.)

The need for accurate facial age estimation systems is becoming ever more important across a wide range of applications, including the purchase of/access to age-restricted goods and services, and the assessment of undocumented humanitarian cases. As age restriction legislation expands globally, biometric age estimation has become central to digital identity compliance and online safety. The implementation of such technology requires an understanding from across many disciplines such as biometrics, forensics, computer science, law, statistics, anthropology and medicine to ensure effective, explainable and lawful deployment.

Co-organised with Richard Guest (University of Southampton, UK), this workshop will explore aspects of the current state-of-the-art in facial age estimation systems considering key elements such as application domains, implementation, testing and evaluation, and legal compliance and regulation. We shall hear from leading global experts in the field, and consider where future research, development and legislation may enhance trust in use.

Attendance is free of charge but registration is required.

The International Standard ISO/IEC 29794-5 Biometric sample quality - Part 5: Face image data was recently published. Along with this new standard the source code of the Open-Source Face Image Quality (OFIQ) software library was provided, which is the reference implementation of this standard.

The standard defines a unified quality score (UQS) for a face image and numerous, component quality measures (CQM), which provide accurate information such as the correctness of the pose or the sharpness of the face image (and many others).

This virtual meeting will provide an overview of the functionality provided with OFIQ and will give users an opportunity to raise questions and provide feedback. The dial-in information will be provided the evening before the event.

EAB Workshop on Biometric Template Protection

Date: 2026-10-14 - 2026-10-15 Location: Online

Attendance is free of charge but registration is required.

Program | Registration

The EAB (in collaboration with Research institute CODE, Michigan State University and Idiap) is organising a second workshop on Biometric Template Protection!

The Biometric Template Protection (BTP) research field has been developing steadily for over two decades, with many innovative solutions having been proposed in this time. As a result of rising concerns around the privacy and security of our biometric data, which is being increasingly demanded for identity management in practical applications, today there appears to be renewed interest in BTP research. This may be attributed to recent and emerging privacy regulations, which are pressuring practitioners to ensure that their biometric systems are legally compliant with the enforced privacy requirements.

There is thus a clear opportunity and a pressing need to explore the BTP research field further, to investigate its practical relevance and to gauge the potential of BTP solutions for achieving more secure and privacy-preserving biometrics-based identity management. During the EAB Workshop on BTP, we will present a clear picture of the progress made thus far, both in the development of different types of BTP schemes and in their Standardised evaluation. We will also discuss the challenges that remain to be tackled.
