In this talk, Dr. Jennifer Williams explores the intersection of Trusted Research principles and the growing threat of audio deepfakes, examining how synthetic media challenges institutional integrity and societal trust. Drawing on world-leading research in audio forensics and AI-generated speech detection, it addresses the responsibilities institutions bear in both advancing and safeguarding against these technologies.

The discussion highlights practical frameworks for researchers navigating dual-use concerns while contributing to robust defences against digital deception.

Curriculum vitæ

Dr Jennifer Williams is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Southampton where she develops privacy and security solutions for speech technology. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE, the elected Secretary General of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA), and former Chair of the ISCA Security and Privacy in Speech Communication special interest group. She has been commissioned by the Alan Turing Institute and the UK Home Office/ACE. She is also an affiliate member of the NIST OSAC Video/Imaging Technology & Analysis Subcommittee.
