Focus: Research and Development

The Norwegian Biometrics Forum (NBF) is an open platform dedicated to regular exchange of information and experience related to the field of Biometrics. The target of the group is the interdisciplinary discussion between research, technology developers, data privacy experts, governmental agencies and operators of Biometric Systems. In the regular meetings new applications, latest research results and products are presented.

The ID World International Congress is the prime conference on the evolving world of biometrics, RFID, smart card technologies and data collection. It is the only international forum that looks at the advanced ID industry as a whole, rather than focusing on a specific technology or vertical sector.

The EAB Management Board will report to the EABAC about current activities and achievements of the EAB.

We invite all EAB members to join us in a conference to discuss the charters and progresses of the SIGs, Committees and Working Groups.

Great practical advice, tips and solutions for all those using or considering using biometrics technology for managing identity and increasing efficiency within government and commercial applications.

The comprehensive three-day programme brings together around 50 international speakers to share insight, expert opinion and hands-on case study experience on the latest technological developments and new trials in the use of biometrics.

The Biometrics Live exhibition is host to around 45 of the leading providers of biometrics technology and services and is free to attend. A series of free seminars look at a range of topics and provide a useful introduction to those new to biometrics.

This symposium is organised by the Biometric Pattern Recognition Group of the University of Twente in cooperation with the IEEE Benelux Chapter on Signal Processing and the European Association for Biometrics. At the symposium the most recent developments in 3D Face Recognition will be presented by leading research institutes and companies from Europe in this field.

This is a joint meeting of the COST IC1106 WG6, IC1206 WG4 together with the EAB EPC in conjunction with BIOSIG 2013.

The European Association of Biometrics, the Cost Action IC1106 (Integrating Biometrics and Forensics for the Digital Age), the Cost Action IC1206 (De-identification for privacy protection in multimedia content), have established to convene a joint meeting between the EAB Ethical Committee, Cost Action IC1106 WG6 (Ethical and societal implications of emerging forensic biometrics), Cost Action IC1206 WG4 (Ethical, bioethical, societal and legal aspects and guidelines for de-identification and reversible de-identification). The joint meeting will be held in Darmstadt/Germany, on Sept 6, 2013, in conjunction with the 2013 International Conference of the Biometrics Special Interest Group (BIOSIG). Main goals of the meeting are to link different initiatives, to exchange information, and to create a wider network devoted to ethical and societal implications of biometrics, and to pave the way for a strategic research agenda on ethical, societal and policy implications of biometrics.

Biometrics provides efficient and reliable solutions to recognize individuals. Growing interests on trustworthiness of authentication stimulate employment of biometric techniques. Nowadays, biometric applications can be found in diverse areas such as health monitoring, national ID cards, e-banking, e-commerce, etc. It rises to challenges of robustness, reliability, interoperability, scalability, system reliability and usability. Large-scale applications such as the European Union Visa Information System (VIS) and Unique Identification (UID) in India require high accuracy. Multimodal biometrics combined with fusion techniques can improve recognition performance. Efficient searching or indexing methods can accelerate identification efficiency. Additionally, quality of acquired biometric samples can strongly influence the performance. Quality assessment methods can notonly guarantee success of authentication but can also provide helpful feedback to system operators during the capturing process. Recently it was shown, that biometric recognition with low cost sensors embedded in mobile devices such as cell phones can improve deployment and acceptance of biometric systems.

EAB is launching the seventh European Biometrics Research and Industry Awards 2013. These prestigious awards are granted annually to individuals who have been judged by a panel of internationally respected experts to be making a significant contribution to the field of biometrics research in Europe.

The 16^th International Conference on Information Fusion will be held in Istanbul, Turkey at the Askeri Museum. Authors are invited to submit papers describing advances and applications in information fusion and encouraged to present unique approaches and examples extending the topics of interest.

The session will focus on the latest innovations and best practices in the emerging field of multi-biometric fusion. Biometrics tries to build an identity recognition decision based on the physical or behavioral characteristics of individuals. Multi-biometrics aims at outperforming the conventional biometric solutions by increasing accuracy, and robustness to intra-person variations and to noisy data. It also reduces the effect of the non-universality of biometric modalities and the vulnerability to spoof attacks. Fusion is performed to build a unified biometric decision based on the information collected from different biometric sources. This unified result must be constructed in a way that guarantees the best performance possible and take into account the efficiency of the solution.

The topic of this special session, Information Fusion in Multi-Biometrics, requires the development of innovative and diverse solutions. Those solutions must take into account the nature of biometric information sources as well as the level of fusion suitable for the application in hand. The fused information may include more general and non-biometric information such as the estimated age of the individual or the environment of the background.

The Workshop Trends in Biometrics provides an overview on current developments in biometrics, including technology, deployments, industrial progress, policy aspects and various other topics that are relevant to the understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of biometric deployments. Topics of the workshop are:

• introduction to biometrics (general principles of face, finger, iris, statistical basis, human involvement etc.)
• standards, testing and evaluation
• market overview (competition, interoperability, vendor selection)
• biometrics for border control and national identity management (registration, organisation, security)
• biometrics and social networks (identification, grouping, profiling)

In the last decade, research on the automated recognition of humans has evolved to cover a large number of applications. From the early days, when security was the driving force behind biometric research, today's challenges go far beyond security. Machine learning, Image understanding, Signal analysis, Neuroscience, as well as other disciplines, converged in a truly multidisciplinary effort to devise and build advanced systems to facilitate the interpretation of signals recorded from individuals acting in a given environment. This is what we simply call today "Biometrics". For the last ten years, the International Summer School on Biometrics has been closely following the developments in science and technology to offer a cutting edge, intensive training course, always in-line with the current state-of-the-art.

The 6^th International Conference on Biometrics (ICB-2013) will have a broad scope and invites papers that advance biometric technologies, sensor design, feature extraction and matching algorithms, analysis of security and privacy, and evaluation of social impact of biometrics technology. Topics will include biometric systems based on fingerprint, iris, face, voice, hand, handwriting, gait and other modalities as well as biometric fusion and emerging biometrics based on novel sensing technologies.

This conference will consider where advanced documents are heading in the future, including both market and technological trends. It will look at the effectiveness of these documents in preventing crime, increasing mobility and enhancing citizen services; it will report on possible weaknesses and risks in the life cycle of documents and the identity architecture within which they are used. Different vertical markets will also be discussed, such as the latest advances in border control and the use of eIDs when interacting with governments. This year's conference also looks at other types of security documents, such as tax stamps and secure labels.

• To present progress in research on Sample Quality Metrics
• To discuss to which extend current approaches satisfy the need of industry and operators of mobile capture devices

We cordially invite you to participate in the 3^rd Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory Annual Workshop 2013 (NBLAW 2013) which is an open and free‐to‐attend event organized by Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory at Gjøvik University College. This event is facing all who are interested in technologies, policies, applications, and wider acceptability of biometrics. The event in 2013 focuses on the topic "off‐the‐shelf technologies" to realise user-centered biometrics with a better acceptability, higher efficiency, and lower deployment cost.

THE EVENT ON BIOMETRICS AND IDENTITY IN EUROPE
The need for understanding and exploiting the current and emerging technologies and services for the automated recognition of human identity is of increasing importance to the economic and social welfare. It deserves a concerted, multidisciplinary and sustained effort. The European context is unique for its diversity, interdependence, heritage and values. It creates special requirements and opportunities for the development of biometric technologies and services to maximise the benefit for the citizens and to protect society from any possible adverse side effects.
The European Biometrics Symposium engages stakeholders from all European countries including the European Commission and the European Parliament. It brings together a pan European network of national contacts points and platforms from governments, industry and academia, and provides a program that appeals to common needs.

The EAB Management Board will report to the EABAC about current activities and achievements of the EAB.
