Biometrics provides efficient and reliable solutions to recognize individuals. With increasing number of identity theft and miss-use incidents we do observe a significant fraud in e-commerce and thus growing interests on trustworthiness of person authentication. Nowadays we find biometric applications in areas like border control, national ID cards, e-banking, e-commerce, e-health etc. Large-scale applications such as the European Union SmartBorder Concept, the Visa Information System (VIS) and Unique Identification (UID) in India require high accuracy and also reliability, interoperability, scalability and usability. Many of these are joint requirements also for forensic applications.

Multimodal biometrics combined with fusion techniques can improve recognition performance. Efficient searching or indexing methods can accelerate identification efficiency. Additionally, quality of captured biometric samples can strongly influence the performance. Moreover, mobile biometrics is an emerging area and biometrics based smartphones can support deployment and acceptance of biometric systems.

However, concerns about security and privacy cannot be neglected. The relevant techniques in the area of presentation attack detection (liveness detection) and template protection are about to supplement biometric systems, in order to improve fake resistance, prevent potential attacks such as cross matching, identity theft etc.

The BIOSIG 2017 conference addresses these issues and will present innovations and best practices that can be transferred into future applications.

Banner for EAB Research Projects Conference The 4th edition of the EAB Research Projects Conference will take place on the 18th and 19th of September 2017, at the premises of Fraunhofer IGD in Darmstadt, Germany. The conference is organized by the European Association for Biometrics (EAB) in cooperation with the Joint Research Center (DG-JRC) of the European Commission, through its Cyber and Digital Citizens' security Unit. The EAB-RPC 2017 will be co-located with the EAB Research Award and the IEEE BIOSIG Conference, later that same week.

The conference is currently the largest event on research funded by the European Union in the area of Biometrics and Identity Management. Over the previous three successful editions, EAB-RPC has become itself as the main forum in Europe where attendees can simultaneously: promote research carried out in biometrics, forge new links and networks, and identify the appropriate partners for possible future project applications. Last year's edition welcomed over 100 participants from academia, industry and public institutions.

This year's edition will include the participation of numerous EU-funded research projects, such as: ARIES, iBorderCtrl, PYCSEL, AMBER, LIGHTest, ABC4EU, HECTOS, BODEGA, PROTECT, SIIP, SWAN, INGRESS, FastPass or Tabula Rasa. Researchers from all over Europe will present the advances achieved in these projects, provide updates on how results from finished projects are being currently used to improve biometric technology and eventually give an insight into the future of biometric research.

In addition to the research community the conference will offer a more holistic and comprehensive perspective of the status of biometric and identity management technology in Europe with the participation of the following stakeholders:

  1. End-users, represented by FRONTEX (border control), ENFSI (forensics) and others<;
  2. Policy makers, represented by the Directorate-General of Migration and Home affairs (DG HOME);
  3. Managers of large IT-systems, represented by the European Agency eu-LISA in charge of deploying and running European systems such as SIS-II or Eurodac;
  4. industrial partners are also welcome to join in order to give their point of view and present the challenges that they face in the development of real-world solutions.

The conference will foster discussion among participants and will include a round-table where all the above communities of practice will put forward their ideas and needs, present the challenges that they face in their daily work and propose solutions.

As such, in addition to provide the latest updates on biometric research carried out in Europe, one of the main objectives of the conference is to bring together all stakeholders to try to find common approaches and strategies to give a coordinated response to the key needs identified by the Union in order to efficiently protect the freedom and security of EU citizens. All the projects in the conference are, in fact, engaged in one of the objectives driving the Union's policy development in order to reach a more secure society (EC COM(2011) 809 final):

  1. Fight crime, illegal trafficking and terrorism;
  2. Strengthen security through border management;
  3. Provide cyber security;
  4. Increase Europe's resilience to crises and disasters;
  5. Ensure privacy and freedom including the Internet and enhance the societal dimension of security;
  6. Enhance standardization and interoperability of systems.

What are the most up-to-date core biometric technologies developed in the field? What is the potential impact of biometrics in forensic investigation and crime prevention? How can biometrics cope with mobile applications? What are the most relevant issues in biometric standardization? What can we learn from human perception? What does it involve to integrate a biometric recognition system?

This school follows the successful track of the International Summer Schools on Biometrics held since 2003. In this 14th edition, the courses will mainly focus on new and emerging issues:

  1. How Biometrics will cope with the demand for mobile applications;
  2. How to exploit new biometric technologies in forensic and security applications;
  3. Standardization, evaluation and assessment of biometric and forensic applications.
  4. Biometric and Forensic identification and advanced research: What is next?

The courses will provide a clear and in-depth picture on the state-of-the-art in biometric verification/identification technology, both under the theoretical and scientific point of view as well as in diverse application domains.

The lectures will be given by 18 outstanding experts in the field, from both academia and industry.

An advanced feature of this summer school will be some practical sessions to better understand, "hands on", the real potential of today's biometric technologies.

Biometrics in Aviation

Date: 2017-06-12 Location: Lisbon, Radisson Blu Hotel (Ave. Marechal Craveiro Lopes, 390 Campo Grande 1749-009 Lisbon Portugal)

Organizer: European Association for Biometrics (EAB) in cooperation with IATA
Program

Banner for Biometrics in AviationBiometrics, both for automated and computer-assisted processes, is becoming more important in the practice of policing, law enforcement (surveillance, intelligence, investigation and evaluation), immigration and border control due to growing phenomena such as mobility, migration, digital economy and cyber societies. Airports, airlines and governments are increasingly confronted with biometrics driven innovations. The e-passport has given an impulse to the development of so called e-gates (or ABC-gates), where verification based on facial recognition facilitates a semi-automated border crossing experience. Many countries have installed biometric equipment to register the biometrics data of incoming travelers. Airlines are working on paperless boarding.

It is evident that biometric technologies have taken a key role in the facilitation of more convenient and secure passengers processing schemes. However, these developments are fragmented. There is a need for information sharing on best practices and lessons learned. A lack of standardization hinders the market uptake of these innovative solutions. Testing and certification is still an area that needs to be explored and developed.

The seminar Biometrics in Aviation will discuss today’s developments in the perspective of the future of identity in an increasingly networked world.The seminar will further familiarize you with biometric methods and applications by providing guidance and new insights on how biometrics can optimize key aspects of the passengers processing at airports: seamless travel experience, customer interaction, operational efficiency, fraud reduction and prevention. During the seminar we will reflect the many new opportunities arising from improved biometric technologies and methods, intelligent use of networked data and sophisticated public/private partnerships:

  1. Hear about biometric solutions being a key enabler for a seamless and secure passengers process;
  2. Learn how biometrics support mega trends such as personalization and location independent services;
  3. Identify how biometrics can be embedded into front end and back end processes;
  4. Discuss the impact of biometrics for passengers processing in the aviation sector;
  5. To understand the role of biometrics in the perspective of current and future developments in global identity management;
In addition Biometrics in Aviation will be a meeting place for all major stakeholders from the aviation industry, including airports, airlines, government and industry.
