Biometrics provides efficient and reliable solutions to recognize individuals. With increasing number of identity theft and miscues incidents we do observe a significant fraud in e-commerce and thus growing interests on trustworthiness of person authentication. Nowadays we find biometric applications in areas like border control, national ID cards, e-banking, e-commerce, e-health etc. Large-scale applications such as the European Union Visa Information System (VIS) and Unique Identification (UID) in India require high accuracy and also reliability, interoperability, scalability, system reliability and usability. Many of these are joint requirements also for forensic applications.

Multimodal biometrics combined with fusion techniques can improve recognition performance. Efficient searching or indexing methods can accelerate identification efficiency. Additionally, quality of captured biometric samples can strongly influence the performance. Moreover mobile biometrics is an emerging area and biometrics based smartphone can support deployment and acceptance of biometric systems.

However concerns about security and privacy cannot be neglected. The relevant techniques in the area of presentation attack detection (liveness detection) and template protection are about to supplement biometric systems, in order to improve fake resistance, prevent potential attacks such as cross matching, identity theft etc.

The BIOSIG 2015 conference addresses these issues and will present innovations and best practices that can be transferred into future applications.

Ethical and Privacy aspects of biometric technology are always in the limelight. Facial recognition, notably its online applications on dispersed database such as Facebook, is undoubtedly one of the critical technologies, whose ethical and privacy aspects are foremost. Technologies for online de-identification could play a pivotal role to solve, at least from a practical point of view, some controversies. Similarly, the issue of biometric evidence into a court continues being a highly debated issue, with significant societal implications and legal impact. Also ethical and privacy implications of mobile applications are still important, they are likely to become more and more important as mobile payment become a common payment method everywhere. Finally, ethical and privacy implications of large biometric database continue being an unsolved question, which demands further efforts from scientists, practitioners, legal experts, and policy makers.

As usual, also the 2015 edition of the Joint meeting of the ethical committee of the European Association of Biometrics, and ethical and privacy working parties of the COST ACTION IC1106 and COST ACTION IC1206 will focus on old problems and emerging issues, with the goal to establish top priorities in this area for the coming year. After a brief introduction from panelists, we aim to develop a free discussion among participants, in order to elicit new ideas, intercept trends, and ouline future scaenarios. The panel includes, Patrizio Campisi, Els Kindt, Emilio Mordini, Marko Sijan.

FUSION 2015: Special Session – Information Fusion in Multi-Biometric Systems

Date: 2015-07-06 - 2015-07-09 Location: Grand Hyatt Hotel, Washington, DC, USA

The International Conference on Information Fusion is a premier forum for interchange of the latest research in information fusion and discussion of its impacts on our society. The conference brings together researchers and practitioners from industry, government, and academia to report on the latest scientific and technical advances. Authors are invited to submit papers describing advances and applications in information fusion.

This session will focus on the latest innovations and best practices in the emerging field of multi-biometric fusion. Biometrics builds an identity recognition decision based on the physical or behavioral characteristics of individuals. Multi-biometrics aims at outperforming the conventional biometric solutions by increasing accuracy, and robustness to intra-person variations and to noisy data. It also reduces the effect of the non-universality of biometric modalities and the vulnerability to spoof attacks. Fusion is performed to build a unified biometric decision based on the information collected from different biometric sources. This unified result must be constructed in a way that guarantees the best performance possible and take into account the efficiency of the solution.

The topic of this special session, Information Fusion in Multi-Biometrics, requires the development of innovative and diverse solutions. Those solutions must take into account the nature of biometric information sources as well as the level of fusion suitable for the application in hand. The fused information may include more general and non-biometric information such as the estimated age of the individual or the environment of the background.

The increase in wide deployment of the biometric applications has also increased the vulnerability of biometric systems for various presentation attacks (or spoof attacks). The goal of presentation attacks is to gain access to the biometric system by presenting a biometric artefact, which serves as replicate of the legitimate subject.

The objective of NBLAW 2015 is to address all aspects of research issues that will eventually establish robust presentation attack detection in biometric systems. This includes the discussion and presentation on various challenges and solutions achieved on Presentation Attack Detection for various modalities including face, iris, fingerprint, and speech biometrics.

Program

Commercial and technical developments regarding biometrics are following up on each other in a rapid pace. Never has the uptake of biometrics for consumer services been so strong. The biggest drivers seem to be mobile applications and cloud based authentication solutions. This symposium will zoom into the various factors that shape these developments in Europe, such as user acceptance, state of the art research, privacy and data protection. Understanding these factors will open up the large opportunities that currently characterize this market.

With the continuous erosion of the borders between convenience and surveillance there is a need for analysis and debate on what our free society needs to keep the balance. State of the art research should not only be engaged in increasing the capturing and storing capabilities, but also on how to do this responsibly. In the ‘After Snowden Era’ there seems to be more awareness and need for products that protect privacy while offering convenience to the end users. A proper response by the research and development community will create new opportunities to capitalize on that.

The European context, which is unique for its diversity, interdependence, heritage and values, creates special requirements and opportunities for the development of biometric solutions and services to maximise the benefit for the citizens and to protect society from any possible adverse side effects.
