This Lunch Talk will provide an overview of what a test lab does (and doesn't) do, the standards underpinning the evaluation of biometrics products and why testing is so important. The main threats and vulnerabilities facing biometric systems are described (covering presentation and injection attacks for different modalities), as well as the impact of machine learning and AI techniques; in particular, the growth of deep fake attacks and other emerging threats and vulnerabilities.

Curriculum vitæ

Dr. Chris Allgrove is an experienced SME, with extensive experience in digital identity and biometrics in the public sector, industry and academia. Chris is co-founder of a biometrics services company delivering consultancy, test and research and development and training services to a range of clients. He provides advice and guidance on the use of biometrics with digital identities, and has authored a number of UK Government guidance documents and standards in this area. In addition to working as a biometrics consultant with the World Bank, Chris is actively involved in international standards and a number of international industry bodies. Previously, Chris was the Head of Identity in Government for the National Cyber Security Centre.

Additionally, the travel and aviation industries need to adapt their systems and procedures to align with the new passport standards, which involves updating check-in systems, security protocols, and customer service practices. By staying informed about the ICAO 2025 passport standards, experts across various fields can ensure a smooth transition, maintain security and efficiency, and support international travel and cooperation effectively.

During this presentation, we will talk about a new threat which targets biometric systems: injection attacks. We will present the standard written by the CEN CENELEC TC 224 WG 18 and describe what will be the impacts for the market.

Kévin Carta is Director of CLR Labs in La Ciotat, a security assessment laboratory specialising in biometrics and digital identity. He is responsible for carrying out security assessments and audits for facial recognition and fingerprint recognition solutions, as well as mobile applications. He is also responsible for the company's standardisation activities in France and internationally on the subjects of biometrics and the European Union's digital identity portfolio. In parallel with these activities, he is working on a PhD on the subject of biometric data injection attacks on facial recognition systems in Android mobile applications.

Implications for the Forthcoming Forensic Sciences Standard ISO/IEC 21043 for Forensic Biometrics

The forthcoming Forensic Sciences standard ISO/IEC 21043 is a methodological and technical standard currently at the stage of Draft International Standard. When adopted, it will apply to all forensic disciplines, including forensic biometrics. This standard has been designed by forensic, legal, and standardisation professionals to ensure that forthcoming forensic services, products, and systems are safe, reliable, and consistently perform as intended. This contribution aims to present to the forensic biometric community the implications of adopting ISO/IEC 21043 for the forensic biometric discipline. After an introduction (Part I) and a review of the existing international standards applied in forensic science (Part II), the five-part structure of ISO/IEC 21043 is described: 1. Terms and definitions, 2. Recovery, 3. Analysis, 4. Interpretation and 5. Reporting, (Part III). Then a selection of requirements and recommendations of this five-part standard are presented, and their implication for forensic biometric research, development, implementation, and practice is analysed (Part IV). The conclusion is that the adoption and use of ISO/IEC 21043 will help forensic laboratories reach accreditation and enhance their existing quality management systems. It will also make it easier for forensic biometric scientists to develop, deliver, and implement more relevant, more reliable, and safer services, products, and systems to the end users, the forensic biometric examiners performing casework (Part V).

Curriculum vitæ

Didier Meuwly shares his time between the Netherlands Forensic Institute, where he is a principal scientist and the University of Twente, where he holds the chair of Forensic Biometrics. He specialises in the probabilistic evaluation of forensic-biometric evidence. Didier has served as a criminalist in several international terrorist cases on request of the ICTY, STL, UN, UK and CH. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 scientific articles and chapters in the forensic science field. He is an associate and guest editor of Forensic Science International (FSI), a member of the R&D standing committee of the ENFSI and a member of the ISO TC 272.

NBLAW 2024 – Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory Annual Workshop 2024

Back in spring 2011 our Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory (NBL) was established and for the opening we organized a workshop. Since then we have celebrated the NBL Annual Workshops (NBLAW). All the workshops are listed on the NBL homepage.

With recent advancements in deep generative networks, the quality of synthetic face images has now reached a point where they are indistinguishable from real data in terms of human perception. To investigate the technological and societal impact of such technology, we invite speakers in the annual NBL workshop 2024 to discuss the benefits, challenges, and security threats associated with synthetic data in the context of face recognition. Our main goal for this workshop is to shed light on how synthetic data influences the application of face recognition from various perspectives, including governmental, legal, psychological, and academic viewpoints. The workshop will be held as a hybrid event and can be attended remotely as well.

Dr. Alicia Locker is part of the OBIM Futures Identity (FI) Team. She engages in discussions with academia and industry in the field of biometrics and identity. Dr. Locker focuses on advances in biometrics that are coming in the next 5-20 years. Dr. Locker has a PhD in behavioral neuroscience and works to incorporate this topic into the government sector to help solve complex biometric and identity problems and enhance homeland security.

The goal of the Bologna Online Evaluation Platform is to provide a trusted platform that can be used to evaluate the performance of face morphing attack detection (MAD) algorithms.​ The platform can be used by academic groups, industry actors, and independent developers to evaluate the performance of both Single Image and Differential attack detectors on various benchmarks. Tests are carried out on sequestered datasets in a controlled environment​. In this talk, the BOEP platform will be briefly described and the main steps needed to submit an algorithm for evaluation will be shown.

Curriculum vitæ

Lorenzo Pellegrini is a post-doc at the University of Bologna, where he received his Ph.D. with a dissertation on “Continual Learning for Computer Vision Applications”. He is mainly active in the Computer Vision area, with his main fields of interest being Continual Lifelong Learning and Biometric Systems. He has been focusing on privacy-sensitive Continual and Federated Learning, with a focus on biometric data. He collaborated in upgrading the FVC platform to allow modern Face Morphing algorithms to be tested on sequestered datasets in a controlled environment.
